An anonymous wealthy benefactor has decided to build a beautiful concert hall in the rural Midwest, and granted a large sum of money to arrange for 12 schools in the vicinity of the festival hall prepare to perform Johann Sebastian Bach's Weihnachtsoratorium, the Christmas Oratorio. Christine Hedge, a poor eleventh-grader with a lovely soprano voice is chosen, along with four others, to sing at the performance. Christine's whole school choir has learned the parts for the Oratorio, and parts of it have been performed at a local church, but only four of them will sing at the combined festival.

Once Christine and her three friends arrive at the small city in which the beautiful new Festival Hall has been built, Christine becomes a leader in the choir, and is seconded to be the personal assistant to Maria Schreiber, a German soloist, who will sing the contralto solos for the Oratorio. Over the course of the week of rehearsal they put in, just after Thanksgiving, Christine, the members of the choir and orchestra (mostly students), and many of the soloists, become very close, and help each other with the personal tragedies, big and small, which arise in the course of the rehearsals.

The Oratorio, which consists of six parts, is to be performed over two days, separated by the week of Christmas. This first part of the story ends with the performance of the first three parts, after which, to Christine's delight (and the delight of her friend, Kelly), Maria decides to come home with Christine, to spend Christmas at the Hedge home.
